The EC40 utilizes a convenient, fast and reliable method for determining the optimum time for mating in the rat or mouse, replacing the conventional vaginal smear method. The technique is based on the principal that the electrical impedance of the epithelial cell layer of vaginal mucosa is significantly higher during the pro-estrus stage compared to that in the other stages of the estrus cycle.
